Sylvia Bell Lucas, 65, of Swansea, S. C. passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Swansea United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Lollis officiating.Burial will follow at Newman Swamp Methodist Cemetery, 1029 Lee State Park Road, Lamar, SC 29069. Originally from Lamar, SC, Sylvia was a graduate of Frances Marion University and began her teaching career at Darlington Academy in 1977. She later moved to Swansea in 1979 and taught for Lexington School District Four for 38 years until her retirement in 2017.She taught many grades, but her favorite was teaching Montessori to 3, 4 and 5 year old children.Receiving many accolades during her long and prosperous career, she was last named Lexington School District Four Teacher of the year in 2007-2008.Sylvia loved each child that came through her classroom door and she loved her community and all of the relationships that she formed throughout it. A long and devoted member of Swansea United Methodist Church, Sylvia sang in the adult choir and led the children’s choir for many years. Sylvia was devoted to the Lord first and foremost, followed by being a Mammy to her nine grandchildren directly thereafter.She was also a loving and devoted mother, wife, sister and daughter. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Wayne Lucas; sons, Lieutenant Colonel Victor Brooks (Meredith) Yarborough, Jr., Stuart Legrand (Jessica) Yarborough, Claire Yarborough (Kevin) Ott; grandchildren, Michael Mae Yarborough, Anna Brooks Yarborough, Victor West Yarborough, Louis Briggs Yarborough, Henry “Hank” Odom Yarborough, Kayleigh Jarrett Yarborough, Loren Legrand Ott, Harriet Lindley Ott, Elizabeth Dare Ott; siblings, Brenda (James) Grooms, Randy (Wanda) Bell and Crystal (Nat) Williams.Mrs. Lucas was predeceased by her parents, Legrand Bell and the late Corrie Mae Yarborough Bell and a special cousin, Shelley Rogers Almers. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Friday, April 15, 2022 at Swansea United Methodist Church fellowship hall and other times at the home. Pallbearers will be Brian Rogers, Caleb Williams, Kevin Almers, Guy Bell, Phillip Yarborough and Justin Bell. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home or Swansea United Methodist Church. Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home of North is assisting the family.
