Ruth Jeffcoat Hutto Lucas passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, just shy of her ninetieth birthday. She was the daughter of the late Madison Jeffcoat and Annie Wise Jeffcoat. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Bennie Hutto, and brothers Ray Jeffcoat, Wiley Jeffcoat, and Cornelius “Snook” Jeffcoat. She is survived by her children, Bonnie Craft (Danny), Bennie Hutto Jr. “B.R.” (Hedwig), Peggy Sossamon, and Lea Ann Lucas; grandchildren, Melissa Craft, Ben Hutto, Luke Meetze, Ashley Wise, Brittany Heyward, Brent Sossamon, Rosanna Hutto-Spraker, Jeffery Wise, and Breanna Sossamon; great-grandchildren Cade Meetze, Alana Meetze, Benjamin Hutto, Hunter Thomas, Penny Hutto, Harper Heyward, Sawyer Heyward, Julia Hutto, Paislee Furtick, Braylynn Sossamon, and Everly Betancourt and sisters, Betty Mitchell and Louise Carnes. Ruth was a child of the Great Depression who believed in hard work, making do with what you have and being thankful for it, and helping others. She was generous to those in need but preferred to keep her good deeds private. She had many different jobs throughout her life and did not retire until after she turned eighty. Her jobs included being one of the first female dump truck drivers in South Carolina, working in the cotton mill, being a seamstress at the Pelion sewing room, working in the cafeteria and housekeeping departments at Pelion Elementary School, caretaker for the elderly, and a security guard at UPS. When she wasn’t working, she loved to read, sit on her front porch, tend to her flowers, complete word searches, listen to Elvis, and visit with her family. Grandma Ruthie, as she was affectionately called, cooked Sunday dinner for her entire family for many years. Anyone who ever shared a meal at her home knows she was a good cook. She was known for her fried chicken, rice and gravy, macaroni and cheese, and sweet tea. If you left her table hungry, it was your own fault. Per her specific request, all services will be private. If you wish to do something in remembrance of her, find a way to be kind to someone without expecting anything in return. Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home, North, S. C. is assisting the family.
