Randy Palmer Hughes, 75, of North died Thursday, April 17, 2025.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 22 at 3 pm at Livingston Methodist Church in Livingston conducted by the Rev. David Marcy. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 2 pm at the church.
Randy was the devoted husband of Cathy C. Hughes for 53 years. They first met in high school and have been a team for the past 60 years.
Together they have two daughters that they nurtured and supported and loved through schools, church, sports, horses, and their own families and careers: Kelley Culler Hughes of Aiken and Holley Palmer Hughes Van Horn of Columbia.
The next generation provided continued joy with four “favorite” family additions, three granddaughters and a grandson: Hannah Catherine Boetsch and Joseph Hughes Boetsch of Aiken and Isabel Anne Van Horn and Ava Palmer Van Horn of Columbia.
Randy is also survived by a brother Mike Hughes and two sisters, Cheryl Townsend and Bonnie Robinson, all of North, as well as nine nieces and nephews.
Randy was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rossie Palmer Hughes of Neeses. He graduated from Norway High School and attended Clemson University, leaving early to return home and operate the family farm.
For more than 42 years he shifted his agricultural knowledge and love of farming to serving the farmers of his community as a Farm Bureau insurance agent and a crop insurance agent until he retired in 2024.
Randy was a man of strong faith and found a home in and became a devoted member of Livingston Methodist Church.
Randy had many talents and enjoyed sharing them with friends and family. His cooking ability was known throughout the community and his big pots always provided more than enough for any gathering. His award-winning Tailgater barbecue sauce was a favorite of many.
He loved the land and spent a lifetime working and improving his treasured farm. He was a man of action and tackled any challenge himself, doing it “his way.” He was always generous sharing his time and talents and know-how to others who sought his common sense life advice. It is fitting that on Earth Day 2025 he will leave this earth on his eternal journey via the land he loved. A private burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery in North.
Pallbearers are Clint Collins, Tommy Williams, Christopher Livingston, Russell Ott, Kevin Ott, PJ Whitten, Jeff Moore, Jamie Davis, Chandler Toole and Joe Culler.
Memorials may be made to Livingston Methodist Church Acolyte Scholarship
Fund, 222 Westside Street, Livingston, SC 29107.
After the funeral service at the church, there will be a celebration of Randy's life at his farm cookhouse at 171 Stockwell Road, North, S. C. 29112. All are invited.
Culler McAlhany Funeral Home in North is in charge of arrangements.
