Margaret S. Sharpe

August 29, 1925 — October 25, 2023

Margaret S. Sharpe, 98, of Swansea, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Sharpe was born in Columbia, SC, a daughter of the late Arthur Clifton and Mary Alice Roberts Sharpe. Margaret was married for 65 years to the late Edward Sharpe of Swansea. Margaret was devoted to her husband and they built a wonderful life together for the two of them and for their three children in a Christian home. “Nana” loved caring for children, sewing, reading her bible, and attending church. At the time of her passing, she was the oldest member and had the longest membership at Swansea First Baptist Church. She loved her church dearly and in her younger days was very involved with her church, by singing in the choir, WMU, and the Metallic Club. If the church doors were open, she wanted to be there! She loved taking trips and enjoyed many with her family. She was an excellent cook and homemaker. She believed in keeping a tidy house and making a comfortable, loving home for her husband and children. Always there when her children came home, they could call out “Momma” and expect to see her there! While her husband, Edward farmed, she took care of everything else and made it seem easy because she never complained. Any child in her care, whether they were her own or children that she cared for, will remember Nana for her cream-of-wheat breakfast and the love she put into everything she did for them. As her great-grandson, Daniel said, “Nana had such a warm and pious soul, which she shared with everyone she came across; her memory will live on in the soul of each one of us fortunate enough to have known her.” Nana loved us “all of the time”, she never judged anyone, and she never spoke an unkind word towards others, never raised her voice. As her pastor once said “She is an encourager”, and that she was! Survivors include her children, Edward Carey Sharpe, Permelia Sharpe (Michael) Luongo and Jacqueline Sharpe (Michael) Hunt; grandchildren, Elita Caryl Sharpe, Allison Dain Sharpe, Edward Norwood (Danielle) Hunt and Coleman Arthur (Kirby) Hunt; great-grandchildren, Faith Augusta Mazzone, Daniel Vincent Mazzone, Christopher Edward Mazzone and Cohen Edward Hunt; sisters, Frances Scott and Cheryl Sherman; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sharpe was predeceased by her great-grandchild, Jace Charles Hunt, five sisters, Pearl Nates, Ruth Kind, Suzie Bass, Sally Jacobs, Mary Williams and three brothers, Carlyle Sharpe, Arthur D Sharpe, and Dr. Rev. Jack Q. Sharpe and stepmother Sarah H. Sharpe. The family would like to thank Rachel Baker for being a patient, kind, compassionate, and devoted caregiver. Also, Fran Granger for her love and care when she sat with Momma. To the wonderful nurses on East Tower 4th floor of Lexington Medical Center, your excellent care, compassion, and patience made a frightful experience bearable. We appreciate your ministry. We also thank Hospice House of Lexington for their gentleness and care. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Sunday, October 29, 2023, at Swansea First Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Wilder, Rev. Matt Elmore and Rev. Ken Freeman officiating. Burial will follow at Melrose Memorial Garden in Swansea. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 P.M. on Sunday before the service at Swansea First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Swansea First Baptist Church (www.swanseafbc.com) or the Margaret and Edward Sharpe Scholarship Fund, Midlands Technical College Foundation (www.midlandstech.edu/givenow).
