Mr. Joseph C. Smith, Jr. of North, SC passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, August 13, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of North, with the Rev. Larry Shull and Rev. Brett Mask officiating.Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia at 2:00 pm following the services. “Joe,” or “J.C.,” as he was known to his family and many friends and loved ones, was born December 7, 1929 in Harrison, Washington County, Georgia, the oldest child of Joseph C. and Eleen Smith. He retired from the United States Army, having served his country proudly and honorably in the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. Subsequent to his military service, he worked for, and retired from, the State of South Carolina’s Division of General Services. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of North and greatly cherished his church home and family. Joe is survived by a son, William C. Smith, and his wife, Ellen Howard Smith, of Columbia, and by their daughters, his beloved granddaughters, Mackenzie Smith of Columbia and Cameron Smith of Washington, D.C., who were both the greatest joys of his life as their “Pepa”.He is also survived by a brother, Bennie Smith of Warner Robbins, Georgia, and two sisters, Elizabeth Page of Decatur, Georgia, and Faye Blount of Harrison, Georgia. He was predeceased by his parents and also by a sister, Linda Query of Harrison, Georgia. He was happily married to his beloved wife Gert Smith for 63 years until her passing in 2015. Joe was not only a wonderful, loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle but, as well, an exceptionally kind and generous man to anyone fortunate enough to make his acquaintance. He was completely unselfish and lived his life according to the belief that one’s worth would ultimately be evaluated by the kindness and compassion we show unto others. His life was a well-lived life in service to his Lord and to those he cherished. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 12, 2018, between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm, at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home (www.mcalhanyfuneralhome.com) in North. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
