Joel Van Smith

Joel Van Smith, 22, son of Carl "JR" and Anglea Smith passed away July 2, 2022 in a tragic car accident.

A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 PM, Sunday, July 10, 2022 at St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church, 648 St. Matthews Road, Swansea, S. C.  29160.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 3:00 - 4:00 pm at the church.  Burial will be held in Friendship Cemetery in Alabama, with details to be announced at a later date.

Joel was born at Fort Carson, CO and moved to South Carolina with his family when he was six months old.  He graduated from Swansea High School in 2018.  Joel worked for BNA Electric, LLC as an electrician.  Joel loved his family and friends with his whole heart – always without judgement. He was a friend to everyone and was loved by all who knew him.  His family will remember him most for the kindness and compassion he showed to those around him.

In addition to his mother Angela (Bobby Maner), he is survived by his sister, Carolina Jade Maner. His maternal Grandmothers: Helene Sever of Augusta, GA and Diane Kelley of Derry, New Hampshire. Paternal Grandparents: Carl Smith, Sr. of Altoona, Al and Jean & Darrell Childress of Albertville, Al.  Aunts and Uncles, Brian Andrews of Augusta, GA; Jennifer Kummel of Derry, New Hampshire; Pam and Gary Stanfield of Altonna, Al; Kim Davis and Scott Childress of Altonna, Al.  Cousins, Ariana and Amya Runge, Aria and Brian Andrews Jr., Jerri Ann Fredrick and Jonathan Stanfield. An extended big family which includes many aunts, uncles and cousins whom he held dear; and a group of young men who were more like brothers than friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl "JR" Smith of Altoona, Al and maternal grandfather, Kevin Kummel of Palmer Lake, CO.
