Edith Lowery Buckwell

October 31, 1933 — October 24, 2018

Edith Lowery Buckwell passed away peacefully at home among family on October 24, 2018.Mom was born to lifelong millworkers Louis Pinkston and Ethel Teal Lowery on October 31, 1933 in McFarlan, NC and grew up in the Rockingham area of NC.She married William Thomas Buckwell in April 1950 and their first son, Thomas Wayne (Bud) was born the following February while Dad was stationed in Ft Bragg, NC.She managed the household and kids when he was stationed overseas and followed him by ship with the two boys, William Louis (Bill) having been born in February 1953.They spent three years in Japan with Catherine Elizabeth being born there in June of 1956.It has always amazed us how the two of them could raise and provide for a family on the salary paid to a sergeant in the Army. Edith dearly loved her family and friends, never had a cross word for anyone, never saw anyone go hungry in her home, never saw Dad working at the house by himself and never found a weed in the yard that could not be conquered.Upon returning to SC from their last military posting, Mom and Dad were among the founding members of Eastwood Baptist Church (Hope Baptist today) where she remains a member today.Once Dad retired and the kids were grown, she started a second career (after much discussion) outside the home; working at Belk’s and eventually retiring from the underwriting department of Seibel’s Bruce Insurance.Through the years, she has been the rock of the family, supporting the kids, grandkids and great grandkids through multiple life events and challenges. For decades, she has been the focal point of the family gatherings, events holidays, and will always be loved and sorely missed. Edith is predeceased by her husband Tommy of thirty-eight years who passed away in 1988, her father and mother in 1969 and 2017 respectively, her brother Louis Ray Lowery in 2007 and her sister Ruby Mae Hord in 2015.She is survived by the three children and spouses, Bud and Audrey Buckwell, Bill and Lorraine (Love) Buckwell, and Cathy and Charlie Stoudemire); five grand-children, Donna Buckwell, Thor Buckwell, Wayne Love, Chuck Stoudemire and Jamie Stoudemire; and eight great grand-children, Riley Buckwell, Courtnee and Aidan Love, Matthew, Kayla and Breelan Stoudemire and Alexis and Cailyn Stoudemire. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Mickie McGrew and Mereldyn Lowery; a brother-in-law, Franklin Hord; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will host a visitation from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, October 26, 2018 at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North, South Carolina (www.mcalhanyfuneralhome.com).A brief graveside service for friends and family will be held at 11:30 A.M., on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Greenlawn Memorial Park (Section H - NorthEast) with Chuck Stoudemire speaking on behalf of the family. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society or in her name to your favorite charity.
