Curtis Eugene Williams, Sr.

Curtis Eugene Williams, Sr., 77, of Bamberg, South Carolina passed away peacefully at his home on October 28, 2023, surrounded by his immediate family. Affectionately known as Cooter to all his friends and family, he was born in Bamberg, South Carolina, to George and Sadie Williams on May 16, 1946. Always sports-minded, Cooter’s love for sports began at an early age. He was an outstanding athlete in football, baseball, and basketball at Bamberg High School. He was on the Red Raider State Championship football team in 1963 and the state championship baseball team in 1964. Cooter continued his athletic career when he was awarded a football scholarship to the University of South Carolina where he lettered in football from 1965-1967. This sparked his lifelong love for the Gamecocks. Coach Williams was a classroom math teacher and coach for many years. His high school coaching career spanned from 1969 to 1995, ending with his tenure as Athletic Director of Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School. He enthusiastically continued to work in Bamberg School District One as Assistant Principal and Director of Transportation until his retirement on June 30, 2023. Cooter is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Robin Allen Williams, one daughter, Caroline Williams McCurry (Comp), two sons, Gene Williams (Gina) and Robert Williams (Jamie); grandchildren Sarah Catherine Williams, Mac McCurry (Maggie), Olin McCurry, Savannah Williams, Emmalyn Williams, and Abigail Williams; and one great-granddaughter Isla Elizabeth McCurry. Cooter is also survived by one sister, Georgia Ann Wood. Additionally, Cooter is remembered affectionately as a brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, coach, former teacher, and friend to many. The visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Fellowship Hall of Bamberg First Baptist Church. The celebration of life will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Bamberg First Baptist Church.
